Early Life & Education

Born as Durgi Biranchi Tudu (later renamed Draupadi by a teacher) on 20 June 1958 into a Santhali tribal family in Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Her father Biranchi Narayan Tudu was a farmer and village head (Sarpanch)

One of the first girls from her village to pursue higher education, she completed her schooling in Bhubaneswar and earned a B.A. from Rama Devi Women’s University

Draupadi Murmu Early Career

Started as a Junior Assistant (1979–1983) in Odisha’s Irrigation and Power Department

Shifted to teaching in 1994, working at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur until 1997, teaching Hindi, Odia, Maths, and Geography

Entry into Politics & State Leadership

1997: Joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), elected Councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat; became vice‑chairperson

2000 & 2004: Elected MLA from Rairangpur.

Held ministerial portfolios in Odisha State Government:

Commerce & Transport (2000–2002).

Fisheries & Animal Resources (2002–2004)

Honored with the Nilkanth Award as best MLA in 2007

Draupadi Murm Governor of Jharkhand (2015–2021)

Became the first female Governor of Jharkhand on 18 May 2015, serving until 15 July 2021 – the state’s longest-serving governor

Advocated strongly for tribal land rights, notably against alterations to the Chota Nagpur Tenancy Act, and implemented reforms in university recruitment and rural welfare

Draupadi Murmu Tragedy & Resilience

Married banker Shyam Charan Murmu in 1980; they had two sons (Laxman and Sipun) and a daughter (Itishree).

Lost both sons (2009 & 2012–13) and her husband (2014), along with her mother and brother in a span of six years

Her resilience during these hardships, reportedly aided by Raja Yoga meditation, inspired her continued public service.

Draupadi Murmu 🇮🇳 Presidency (2022–Present)

NDA/BJP candidate in the 2022 presidential election, elected on 18 July 2022 with 64.03% of the electoral vote; sworn in on 25 July 2022 .

Achievements:

First tribal and second woman President of India.

Youngest-born post-Independence President (64 at time of election) .

Key initiatives: launched “Pradhanmantri TB Mukht Bharat”, became the first President to inaugurate Karnataka’s Mysuru Dasara.

Diplomatic engagements:

2022: Attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in London.

State visits to Suriname, Serbia, etc., receiving honours such as Suriname’s Order of the Yellow Star.
